Hmmmm......

There are lots of ways of being miserable, but there's only one way of being comfortable, and that is to stop running round after happiness. If you make up your mind not to be happy there's no reason why you shouldn't have a fairly good time.

I don't think Edith had it quite right. I mean, glass half empty much?

I'm more in line with the Buddhists and philosophers, and Alain de Botton! Expectations are the killer. If you think "when this happens, then I'll be happy" or "if I buy that, then I'll be happy". But then the excitement of new things fades, they break, or they don't meet up to their expectations. It's only human nature though.
