I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors. That's Thomas Jefferson. You know, one of those Founding Fathers so often cited when someone is trying to justify NOT changing things from the way they were envisioned a few hundred years ago.

It's like those crazy right-wing evangelicals do - choose passages from the bible to suit their purpose, ignore all of the other thoughts that don't match up with the way things "ought" to be.
i love jefferson. the man was a genius. do you know he didn't think everyone should be allowed to vote? he felt voting should be a priveledge reserved for those with an education. too right, i say.
