It's time we all reach out 4 something new

This isn't so NEW as it is NOVEL, I think, at least for me. Cauliflower is kind of an autumn crop, but it feels so SPRING in its purple finery, doesn't it? I'm obviously no food photographer, but I couldn't resist snapping a photo before partaking of the goodness. Pretty, no? I drizzled it with extra virgin olive oil and added a dash of kosher salt. But you knew that. For those of you who don't enjoy vegetables (Charlie!), you should try the EVOO drizzle. I find it enhances almost any vegetable. I bet it would even work on old man pickle.

I just planted purple potatoes, lol simply I want to see what purple mashed potatoes look like, but there is something about the varied colors of vegetables. Cool pic

I would like to try those potatoes, too! This purple cauliflower just called to me from the Kroger produce section. I hate the whole head.

You "hate" the whole head? Too much hate in the world!

Don't purple things often become unpurple (or less purple) when cooked? BTW - factoid, early carrots were white or purple. The orange colour is a johnny come lately.

Hateratin'! I didn't mean to go all Mary J Blige on your asses. That was Mary, right?

I had/ate the whole head? I dunno.

RE: color fade
Yeah, I steamed the cauliflower and what you see is the AFTER. If anything, it got MORE purple.

Now I want a purple carrot. Oh, and I bought some white asparagus, too. My space is a RAINBOW place, after all.

I see your true colors, shining through.....

True colours, and that's why I love you...

So don't be afraid...

To let them show...

Your true colours. True colours, are beautiful like a rainbow....

Did you sing it "wainbow"?

How else?

but no way purple cauliflower.
it is plain wrong.

So how did it taste? Like cauliflower, broccoli, or a sensation you can't live without?

I'm a purple lover and I do like novelty but still, I'm thinking that bowl looks like a big plate of biological hazard material. Seriously, isn't that what they make Penicillin from, yo!

Michael said...

ur-spo, if loving the purple cauli is wrong, I don't wanna be right. And I'm kinda mad at you for making me say that. And sing it.

Peter, do I have to pick just one? It was like cauliflower always is...it's make or break depending on how you cook it. I don't like it mushy or raw, and I hit the sweetspot with this head. Nummers.

CB, thanks bitch, now my shopping list is a little longer. Is it like rainbow FLAG rainbow?

Beau, I think it's my cheap camera and lack of photography skillz, because it was actually quite lovely and palatable-looking (what's the word for that?). It was akin to the color of purple cabbage. And it was the best, though not the first, bio-hazard I've ever eaten. Ahhhh, takes me back to my days as a Micro T.A.

Why is it purple? Is it natural?

And did you really eat the whole head? Did you spend the rest of the night farting under the sheets? Enquiring minds want to know.

I saw orange cauliflower in the store the other day. While purple is pretty, the orange was a little weird looking. And another great vegetable/salad topper - lemon oil! Just a few drops makes everything heavenly.

From deliciousorganics.com:

Purple Cauliflower is WILD and is actually better for us. The color is caused by anthocyanins (like those found in red cabbage and red wine) that is an antioxidant. It is beautiful eaten raw but can also be gently steamed. Use lemon juice or vinegar in the water to set the color. If you cook it too much it will turn green, but if you cook it just right, it will stay purple!

I didn't add lemon juice or vinegar. Just steamed it for five minutes and voile', even more purple. The steam-water even turned purple. And YES I hate the whole head. Cruciferous gluttony! Is it supposed to make me fart all night? I thought that was veggie chili's job.

Bluebunny, lemon oil? I gotta try that. I had a salad the other night with a lemon-basil vinaigrette that curled my toes.

Cauliflower gives me gas.

There, I said it.

I'd like to try that purple stuff, though. I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Yeah, if you could eat a rainbow flag!
